    Subglacial Volcanic Eruption in Iceland

Iceland has put its Coast Guard on alert and raised its aviation alert to the highest level of red due to a subglacial eruption of lava at one of the country’s biggest volcanoes, the 15.5 mile-wide Bardarbunga volcano. The volcano has been rattled by thousands of earthquakes over the past week, which are happening so quickly that “it is difficult for the seismologist to discern individual events,” according to Iceland’s Meteorological Office in Reykjavik’s website. “The activity continues and an eruption can therefore not be ruled out.” No visible signs of any eruption at the surface have been detected so far. Scientists and engineers have been flying over the area with the Coast Guard, however, and have not detected any signs of an eruption on the surface.
