Belgrade was sealed off on Sunday for Serbia's first gay pride parade in four years. When a gay pride parade was held last in 2010, hardline nationalists attacked parade marchers and clashed with the police, resulting in 150 injured. Thousands of special police were stationed to maintain security for this year's marchers after right-wing groups made threats against the parade, but there were no incidences during it. Up to 1,000 people participated in the parade carrying signs that said “Pride,” “Peace,” and “Love.” The march was viewed as a test of the EU's commitment to protecting minority rights. "I really hope that this will help people to understand our needs, and that it'll be the first step toward respecting our rights," said a 26-year-old man in Belgrade, who declined to give his name.
