A petition calling for the destruction of a white artist’s painting of Emmett Till has been taken down, The Daily Beast has learned. Dana Schutz’s painting of the murdered black teenager, Open Casket, went on display at the Whitney Biennial art exhibit last Friday and immediately provoked protests and condemnations. British artist Hannah Black launched a petition calling on the Whitney to remove and destroy the painting. Black said in a statement it is “not acceptable for a white person to transmute Black suffering into profit and fun.”
The petition was taken down from Facebook on Thursday afternoon. In response to an inquiry from The Daily Beast, Black wrote: "I'm not doing any press thanks."
