51-year-old Jeffrey Scudder, a former CIA employee, tells The Washington Post that he was forced out of the agency after discovering and submitting for release under the Freedom of Information Act a number of secret articles about long-dormant conflicts and operations that he thought should have been released to the public years ago. Scudder says he was confronted by supervisors and accused of mishandling classified information. His home was raided by the FBI and his family’s computers seized. He was then stripped of his job and security clearance, at which point Scudder agreed to retire (he was told that if he refused, he would risk losing much of his pension). “I submitted a FOIA and it basically destroyed my entire career,” Scudder said. “What was this whole exercise for?” The CIA declined to comment.
