Good thing Jeffrey Goldberg picked up the call: Fidel Castro invited the columnist to Cuba to discuss the current problems between Israel and Iran, after reading his piece in The Atlantic about a nuclearized Iran and what it means for Israel. The former Cuban president told Goldberg that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is contributing to the long tradition of “slandering the Jews.” "The Jews have lived an existence that is much harder than ours. There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust,” Castro said to Goldberg. Castro fears a nuclear confrontation between the West and Iran, and said “the Iranian capacity to inflict damage is not appreciated.” As for Cuba’s (and Castro’s) role in the 1962 Missile Crisis – when the U.S. waited with baited breath for a nuclear attack from the USSR due to missile tips in Cuba pointed at Florida – Castro said “after I've seen what I've seen, and knowing what I know now, it wasn't worth it all."
