More than a year after she was shot, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will give up her seat in Congress to focus on her recovery. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords announced in a video message. The congresswoman said she’ll hand her resignation to Speaker John Boehner, but will still attend Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday. She did hint at a comeback, however: "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will schedule a special election to replace Giffords for the remainder of her term.
