Mark Twain

Mark Twain, possibly apocryphally, once said: “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” America’s favorite writer is of course much better known for dressing up in white suits. But Open Culture recently turned our attention to a photograph of Sam Clemens taken in 1883. Shirtless Mark Twain has even had a Twitter account since September.

Turns out, Twain is by no means the only author who’s posed topless. From William Faulkner to Ernest Hemingway, here are other writers who’ve gone shirtless.
