Two people were injured Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at the Topkapi Palace, a major tourist attraction in Istanbul. A Turkish soldier and a security guard were hurt before police snipers killed the gunman, a Libyan who had entered the country three days before. The man drove up to the palace in a car with Syrian license plates just moments after Turkey’s president announced harsh new economic sanctions against Syria in protest of the Syrian government’s violent crackdown on protesters. Some tourists threw themselves to the ground to avoid injury when the shots were fired.
