Plenty of careers in America begin with sex tapes, but not in Indonesia: Nazril "Ariel" Irham, the lead singer of a band called Peterpan and the country's biggest pop star, has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail for sex tapes with his girlfriends that found their way onto the Internet. Irham insisted they were not meant for publication, but he became the first person to be tried under the country's strict new anti-pornography law that went into effect in 2008. The singer's conviction divided the country; fans said the embarrassment of the tapes was punishment enough, while hardliners stormed the courthouse chanting, "Too light! Too light!" With 237 million people, Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population.
