There are 145 journalists imprisoned throughout the world, according to a new report from the Committee to Project Journalists. That number is the highest total since 1996 and is up nine from last year. China and Iran are the biggest offenders: Each country has locked up 34 journalists. The number could have been even higher. Earlier this year Cuba released 17 jailed journalists, who had been held since 2003.
