A judge struck down Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards' pro-LGBT order on Wednesday, claiming that it exceeded his authority. Edwards had put forth a rule to prevent state agencies, as well as private companies, from discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people. Todd Hernandez,19th Judicial District Court Judge, ruled that the governor had overstepped his legal authority with the move. “I applaud Judge Hernandez for basing his ruling on the law, not politics,” said Attorney General Jeff Landry. “My challenge has always been about upholding the checks and balances on executive authority as established in our State Constitution.” Edwards responded that he was “disappointed” in the decision but said he intends to appeal it.
