The Supreme Court will soon be without its leading liberal: Justice John Paul Stevens, the oldest member of the court, has announced that he will retire this summer after 34 years. Stevens, who is 11 days shy of his 90th birthday, said he hopes his successor is confirmed “well in advance of the commencement of the court’s next term.” The leading candidates to succeed him are Solicitor General Elena Kagan and federal-appellate court judges Merrick Garland and Diane Wood.
