A blogger in Mauritania was sentenced to death for apostasy because of an article he wrote more than a year ago. Last week, Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mohamed was condemned to death for writing an article titled “Religion, religiosity, and craftsmen,” in which he said Islam is interpreted circumstantially, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. At the time the article ran, a fatwa was issued against Mohamed, and there were nationwide protests for his family to denounce him. He is the first person in Mauritania to be sentenced to death for apostasy charges.
