Michigan Republican Mike Rogers will chair the House Intelligence Committee, House Speaker-to-Be John Boehner’s office said Wednesday. Rogers, a former FBI agent and U.S. Army officer, beat out Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) for the position. Boehner’s office announced that Thornberry would be the next vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Rogers, the third Michigan congressman to have an important House leadership position, drew headlines last year when he claimed that the Obama administration had told federal agents to read Miranda rights to detainees kept in American prisons in Afghanistan.
