President Obama announced on Monday that he will narrow the circumstances under which the United States would use nuclear weapons. For the first time, the U.S. has made an explicit commitment to avoid using nuclear weapons against states who have agreed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Although Obama’s restructuring of America’s nuclear strategy would limit weapons-use even in the country's own defense, exceptions would be made for “outliers like Iran and North Korea” who have yet to agree to a treaty ceasing nuclear proliferation. This comes with a broader effort to make nuclear weaponry obsolete and curbing countries' nuclear ambitions. “We are going to want to make sure that we can continue to move toward less emphasis on nuclear weapons,” said Obama, while emphasizing the use of conventional weapons instead.
