A Russian opposition leader was arrested on Sunday as he and thousands of others participated in anti-corruption protests across the country. Aleksei Navalny, a strong critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was hauled away in a police van even as protesters attempted to block the vehicle from leaving. “Guys, I’m okay,” Navalny wrote on Twitter. “No need to fight to get me out. Walk along Tverskaya. Our topic of the day is the fight against corruption.” Moscow police officials said “around 500” people were arrested in the capital city alone, dubbing the protests an “unapproved public event.”
