A joint investigation by BuzzFeed News and the BBC revealed a core group of 16 professional tennis players, including eight due to begin playing in the Australian Open on Monday, have been repeatedly reported to the Tennis Integrity Unit on suspicion of throwing games. All of the players, including Grand Slam winners, were allowed to continue competing and none have faced sanctions. The joint report cites a cache of documents, which include the findings of an inquiry set up in 2007 by the Association of Tennis Professionals. The documents found betting syndicates in Russia, northern Italy, and Sicily making hundreds of thousands of dollars betting on games investigators thought to be fixed—including three games at Wimbledon. In a 2008 confidential report, the inquiry concluded that 28 players who participated in these games should be investigated, but the findings were never followed up. The sport introduced a new anti-corruption policy in 2009, but said it could not take legal action against previous corruption offenses.
