A top British military official was ordered to leave his post in Afghanistan after he drank a bottle of champagne with colleagues, according to a report. Maj. Gen. Charlie Herbert, one of the most senior U.K. military figures who was sent to Afghanistan, began a post in Kabul in 2017 where he was responsible for training Afghan officials, The Telegraph reports. His tenure was supposed to last a year but he returned three months early after a complaint was made about his conduct, including allegations of using inappropriate language and openly consuming alcohol with Afghan colleagues. Herbert, who retired from the British Army in 2019, told the newspaper: “After investigation by the British Army, the allegations referred to were found to be unproven and vexatious with the exception of a single one that I shared a bottle of champagne with some work colleagues, in breach of a U.S. rule on the consumption of alcohol.”
