Officials arrested 10 volunteer firefighters in North Carolina for allegedly “setting fire to abandoned buildings and woods over two years,” CBS News reports. Robeson County Sheriff Ken Sealey said that the accused, from local Fairmont Rural and Orrum fire departments, were conspiring to commit arson and that “hundreds of thousands of dollars” were wasted responding to purposely placed fires. Ninety arson-related charges have resulted in the year-long investigation, and police say they expect more charges and arrests pending its conclusion. While authorities did not identify any of the 10 firefighters, they said a former local police officer and a state Department of Corrections officer were involved.
