An aftershock from Friday morning’s earthquake in New Jersey was felt across parts of the tri-state area on Friday evening. The aftershock, which occurred at 5:59 p.m., had a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was based in Gladstone, New Jersey, according to The New York Times. This is only about 18 miles from the epicenter of the rare 4.8 magnitude tremor which struck the area 8 hours earlier, and could be felt across much of the Northeastern United States. New York City officials said they had received no “major damage reports” following the aftershock. Kishor S. Jaiswal, a research structural engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey, said that smaller aftershocks can be expected for up to a week after the initial earthquake.
