Authorities say at least 15 are dead and more than 60 wounded following a clash between police and Islamist protesters in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka. Led by Hefazat-e Islam, the protesters took to the streets to demand stricter laws against those who insult Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades to disperse the tens of thousands rioting. A spokesman for police told reporters Monday morning that the harsh tactics were a last resort. “We were forced to act,” he said. The incident was unrelated to Bangladesh’s deadly April 24 factory collapse.
