Adam Serwer: Arizona’s Scary Immigration Legacy

Voters' pushback won't curb the state's excess.

While most liberals are celebrating Tuesday’s recall of the Arizona Senate President who masterminded the state’s controversial immigration crackdown, Mother Jones’s Adam Serwer is content to dwell on the downside. The fact remains that Arizona’s draconian approach to illegal immigration has become mainstream in the GOP. For Exhibit A, look no further than Herman Cain joking about killing would-be border-crossers with an electrified fence. “The question now,” writes Serwer, “is whether anyone in the GOP is actually having second-thoughts about the party’s anti-immigration agenda after [the Senate president’s] loss.”
