A U.S. military plane crashed in Afghanistan, a military spokesman confirmed on Monday. The Taliban claimed that a U.S. military plane crashed in Afghanistan following a disputed announcement from Afghan officials that it was a Boeing passenger jet. Initially, a spokesman for the provincial governor’s office in Ghazni city, near the site of the crash, said a Boeing jet operated by Ariana Airlines had come down—but the airline said both of its jets operating in the area landed safely. Spokesman for the U.S. forces in Afghanistan Col. Sonny Leggett said that the plane was a U.S. Bombardier E-11A. “While the cause of crash is under investigation, there are no indications the crash was caused by enemy fire. We will provide additional information as it becomes available. Taliban claims that additional aircraft have crashed are false,” he added. The number of people on board remains unclear.
