Top-Ranking New Zealand Official Planted Camera in D.C. Embassy Toilet: Prosecutors
WAIT, WHAT?
The top official at New Zealand's U.S. embassy hid a camera in one of the building's unisex toilets in 2017, according to prosecutors. The gross allegation was made against Alfred Keating—a former New Zealand naval commodore—when he appeared in an Auckland court on Monday. Keating is facing a charge of attempting to intentionally make an intimate visual recording and, if convicted, could face up to a year and a half in jail, according to CNN. The camera was allegedly hidden inside a heating duct at the Washington D.C. embassy and was discovered in July 2017 when it fell to the floor covered in dust. Keating's DNA allegedly matched the DNA found on the camera's memory card. He had diplomatic immunity from prosecution in the United States. He's pleaded not guilty to the charge.
