At least 21 people died, more than 1,000 were injured and dozens were missing after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Turkey at 8:55 p.m. local time on Friday evening. The 40-second temblor, centered in Sivrice, was followed by more than a hundred aftershocks. Emergency crews were seen digging through collapsed buildings and piles of rubble for survivors. “Our biggest hope is that the death toll does not rise,” Turkish parliamentary speaker Mustafa Sentop told the Anadolu Agency.
