The CEO of German carmaker Audi, Rupert Stadler, was arrested Monday as part of the investigation into parent company Volkswagen’s alleged diesel-emissions cheating. The emissions scandal erupted in 2015 when the company admitted nearly 600,000 cars sold in the U.S. were fitted with devices designed to cheat emissions tests. The devices could tell when they were being tested and cut the vehicles’ emissions, but on the open road the level of emissions could be as much as 40 times as bad as the level recorded under lab conditions. A spokesman for VW said: “We confirm that Mr. Stadler was arrested this morning. The hearing to determine whether he will be remanded is ongoing.”
