Shoshana Johnson became a prisoner of war in March 2003 in Iraq. After three weeks in captivity, she was rescued by U.S. Marines. She is the first black female POW in U.S. history. Her honors include the U.S. Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and the Prisoner of War Medal. She has an associate of arts degree and a culinary arts degree from El Paso Community College, and is now studying for a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and nutrition at the University of Texas. She is the author of the memoir I’m Still Standing.
