The body of an 8-month-old boy wearing only a diaper has been found floating in the water near the Brooklyn Bridge. A family spotted the boy—who they initially believed to be a doll—in shallow water near the Manhattan shoreline around 4 p.m. Sunday. Monte Campbell said his wife, Diana, first noticed the body, then he “walked out mid-thigh level” in the East River and retrieved the baby and attempted to perform CPR—but the baby had no respiration and showed no pulse, the AP reports. Police arrived at the scene shortly after and brought the baby onto the pedestrian walkway, where they continued CPR before the boy was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. No parent or guardian of the infant was present at the scene and the child showed no signs of trauma, police said. It’s not clear how long the baby was in the water.
