A 19-year-old British woman who joined ISIS, and recently gave birth in a Syrian refugee camp, said she wants to go home, according to the New York Times. Shamima Begum asked that she be allowed to return during an interview with Sky News on Sunday. Begum, who had just fled the last village held by ISIS in Syria, nevertheless defended her presence in the war torn region. Begum claimed she was only in the region to care for her husband and children, insisting she neither produced ISIS propaganda nor encouraged travel to Syria. Begun was among the three schoolgirls who left England for Syria in February 2015, when she was just 15-years-old. While U.K. officials had initially said they would be permitted to come home without facing charges, home secretary Sajid Javid recently said that he would not shy away from keeping terrorist supporters from returning. Begum said she was attracted to ISIS “by the propaganda videos.”
