The death toll in a devastating Northern California wildfire that wiped out an entire town has risen to 23, while at least 110 people remain missing, authorities said late Saturday. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said efforts are underway to identify the deceased by DNA as a coroner’s team searches for additional victims in scorched areas. The so-called Camp Fire just north of Sacramento has scorched 105,000 acres, destroyed 6,700 homes, and forced 52,000 people from their homes. “This event was the worst-case scenario,” Honea said Saturday. “It’s the event that we have feared for a long time.” Firefighters have so far contained 20 percent of the fire. Meanwhile in Southern California, two separate wildfires put more than 200,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The Woolsey Fire incinerated homes in lavish, celebrity-filled Malibu and authorities said it has killed at least two people.
