Canadian Man Sentenced to Death in China for Drug Smuggling

A Canadian man has been sentenced to death in a Chinese court after prosecutors decided an original 15-year sentence for alleged drug smuggling, announced in November, was too lenient. Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was retried Monday by the Dalian Intermediate People’s Court in the northeast province of Liaoning. Prosecutors reportedly said they had evidence to suggest that Schellenberg was involved in an international drug crime, but he’s argued that he was a tourist visiting China and was framed. The case will worsen tensions between Beijing and Ottawa even further after Canada’s arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the United States in December. China has since arrested two Canadian citizens under suspicion of endangering state security.
