The driver of a vehicle that was hit by two Long Island Rail Road trains Tuesday evening was fleeing the scene of a minor crash moments before, an eyewitness told law enforcement, according to Nassau County police. The second crash killed all three occupants of the car. According to the witness, who was involved in the minor collision, the driver was trying to go around a railroad gate when their car collided with two trains. The identities of the driver and the vehicle’s two other occupants are still pending, as the crash destroyed the vehicle, leaving only parts of the engine intact, Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said. The vehicle was struck by an eastbound train, then pushed into the path of a westbound train, before it was crushed and torn into pieces. A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman said the agency was “working around the clock” to restore full service to the station where the crash occurred.
