A hospital in Canada has suspended surgeries due to an ant infestation. Carman Memorial Hospital in southern Manitoba has temporarily paused operations, including elective surgeries, after red ants were spotted crawling under doors and through hallways, according to CBC. Southern Health, which operates the facility, said surgeries were halted because even a single ant could compromise the sterile conditions required for medical procedures. A spokesman said staff were taking “precautions to remedy the situation in an effort to avoid any further surgical cancellations and any chance that the ant problem may get worse.” Officials said the infestation posed no significant risk to patients, staff, or the building’s integrity, and noted that many procedures remained unaffected. The issue is being addressed “immediately,” a spokesman for Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara told the outlet. Exterminators have cleaned drains, sealed cracks, and set baited sticky traps throughout the hospital to curb the infestation.
