Former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle seemed a perfect pick to shepherd President Obama's health plan through Congress, but the nominee for health and human services secretary has instead proved to be a continuous headache even before being confirmed. Obama officials say Daschle was aware of a new set of problems resulting from his failure to pay taxes on a car and driver supplied by a private equity firm as early as June, but failed to inform the transition team of the issue until weeks after he had been tapped for the Cabinet position. The surprise stumbling block puts the competence of Obama's vetting team into question and Daschle on the ropes, but the president is standing behind his nominee for now.
