David Weigel resigned from The Washington Post Friday in the wake of emails, leaked from a private listserv, in which the blogger made fun of some Republicans. Three months ago, the newspaper hired Weigel to write about the conservative movement (and reportedly erroneously believed the blogger to be a conservative himself), and he received widespread praise during his term. Weigel sent an email to JournoList, an off-the-record listserv for center and left-leaning commentators, saying Matt Drudge should "handle his emotional problems more responsibly and set himself on fire." He also referred to avid supporters of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) as the "Paultard Tea Party." The Daily Caller, a conservative blog founded by Tucker Carlson, reported the emails Friday. (Carlson had requested several times to join JournoList but was refused. In the wake of this incident, the listserv was spiked.) Washington Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli said the paper “can’t have any tolerance for the perception that people are conflicted or bring bias to their work.”
