Upgraded to a Category 2 storm with winds up to 100 mph, Hurricane Alex veered north and is predicted to hit the Texas-Mexico border late Wednesday night. Heavy winds and rain have also shut down Mexico’s crude oil production, and towns along the Gulf Coast have been evacuated in preparation. The National Weather Center said “only a small” portion will hit the Texas coastline, and FEMA has set up staging grounds near San Antonio to ferry supplies south if needed. Although it will not hit BP’s damaged oil well, oil production in Texas and Louisiana was halted due to the storm.
