Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who in his lifetime has suffered five heart attacks, underwent surgery last week in which doctors implanted a pump to combat congestive heart failure. A Left Ventricular Assist Device was implanted, according to a family spokesperson. The American Heart Association describes the device as "a battery-operated, mechanical pump-type," that "helps maintain the pumping ability of a heart that can't effectively work on its own."
