The first turtles rescued from the Gulf after the BP spill began spewing 205 million gallons of crude oil into their natural habitat have been returned home, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 32 endangered sea turtles released are part of the 300 turtles recovered from the site of the worst environmental disaster in American history. More than 600 sea turtles were found dead onshore or in the water, following the spill. "It's a beautiful sight," said Brian Stacy, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as he watched turtles descending back into their watery wilderness. “This is home sweet home for them." Federal labor costs for each rescued turtle are estimated at $50,000.
