A pediatrician is refusing to care for a baby in Michigan because she is the child of a same-sex couple. Jami and Krista Contreras chose Dr. Vesna Roi months before their daughter was born. However, when they brought her in for her first checkup, the pediatrician told them that she had decided she could not treat the baby because she was the child of lesbians. Roi declined to comment, but the Detroit Free Press shared a letter the doctor sent to the Contreras family: “Dear Jami & Krista, I am writing this letter of apology as I feel that it is important and necessary. I never meant to hurt either of you. After much prayer following your prenatal [visit], I felt that I would not be able to develop the personal patient doctor relationship that I normally do with my patients.” The Contrerases say they are going public to bring attention to the absence of a law in Michigan to protect LGBT people from discrimination. “It was embarrassing. It was humiliating...It’s just wrong,” said Jami Contreras said of the pediatrician’s actions.
