Officials said a 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy each lost an arm in two separate shark attacks at a North Carolina beach on Sunday. The female was first attacked around 4 p.m. and the second incident happened less than 90 minutes later, according to Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace. Both victims were airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, where they were in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Martha Harlan. The female had her arm amputated at the elbow while the boy’s arm was amputated below the shoulder, Harlan said. The girl also suffered serious tissue damage to her leg. Both incidents occurred at high tide near the popular beach spot Ocean Crest Pier. Wallace told CNN that shark attacks at Oak Island are very rare.
