At least 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Minnesota governor’s residence early Thursday, in the hours after a police officer fatally shot 32-year-old Philando Castile while he was in a vehicle with his girlfriend and her small child. His girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds, broadcast the immediate aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live—a graphic video that has made headlines around the world. The St. Paul crowd chanted “No justice, no sleep!” and “Mark Dayton, do you care?” while honking car horns and covering railings in police tape. Minneapolis NAACP President Nekima Levy-Pounds called on the Minnesota governor to “wake up and make a statement.” “Philando Castile was an upstanding citizen according to all the reports we’ve heard,” Levy-Pounds told reporters. “We just have a number of questions about how something like this could happen once again.” Police were extinguishing a fire outside of the governor’s home at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, and protesters remained outside the building—from which Dayton had been evacuated over safety concerns—at least an hour later.
