Civil Rights Activist Charles Evers Dies at 97

Charles Evers, the older brother of famed activist Medgar Evers, became the first Black mayor since Reconstruction in Mississippi with his 1969 election.

Civil rights activist Charles Evers died at 97 on Wednesday morning. The older brother of famed activist Medgar Evers, Charles Evers was elected mayor of Fayette, Mississippi in 1969, making him the first Black mayor in Mississippi since Reconstruction. After his brother was assassinated in June 1963, Evers took on his position as state NAACP field secretary, and led several boycotts and marches. He ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1978 as an independent, but lost election to Republican Thad Cochran. Evers died surrounded by his family in Brandon, Mississippi.
