The art of making this deal just got a bit harder. King Frederik of Denmark has changed the royal coat of arms to emphasize a symbol of Greenland, in a perceived rebuke to Donald Trump who has said he wants to buy the Danish-owned territory. The royal household said the change “strengthens the prominence of the commonwealth.” It’s not just Donald Trump the king might be telegraphing but also Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, who recently called for the semi-autonomous region’s independence. Royal expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen told The Guardian, “It is important to signal... Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Danish realm, and that this is not up for discussion.”
