So far 58 people are known to have died after torrential rains caused wide-spread flooding in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, according to the BBC. A 5-month-old baby was pulled from the rubble alive, according to emergency teams on the ground. Rescue workers battled rising waters to reach the most remote parts of the region, cautioning that the death toll will surely rise. Mudslides and fallen trees have blocked crucial transportation links, making it difficult to get help to the affected areas. More than 4,000 people have been evacuated and more than 100 houses have been buried in mud. Heavy deforestation is blamed in part for the landslides. Local officials had warned such disasters could occur.
