Approximately 50 people were killed Saturday when a fuel tanker collided with a vehicle in the Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said. Deputy Governor of Kongo Central province, Atou Matubuana Nkuluki, said another 100 or so people had suffered serious burns as a result of the accident in the village of Mbuta, according to Reuters. The flames from the crash also engulfed nearby houses, the United Nations’ Radio Okapi reported. No further details were immediately available. This is not the first mass casualty incident caused by a fuel tanker in the central African nation. In 2010, more than 200 people were killed when a fuel tanker overturned and sent flames into nearby homes and buildings.
