At least 27 Afghan soldiers were killed Friday when a blast tore through a mosque inside a military base in the eastern Khost province, officials said. Another 57 troops were wounded in the explosion, which occurred while soldiers were taking part in Friday morning prayers. A military spokesman cited by the Associated Press said it wasn't clear if a suicide bomber had carried out the attack or if a remote detonator had been used. No group has claimed responsibility, but the military base is located in an area known to be a stronghold of the Haqqani network, an offshoot of the Taliban. Hundreds of Afghan military and security forces have been killed in recent months in almost daily attacks by the Taliban.
