Known for his steadfast opposition to government spending (thus the nickname Dr. No), Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma has decided to step down. Coburn, who has been battling prostate cancer, says the move is to honor his pledge to serve no more than two terms in the Senate, a body he joined in 2004. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said of Coburn that he is "one of the most intelligent, principled, and decent men in modern Senate history."
