The trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman offered new details of his bad romance with Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez Lopez on Friday. The federal jury got to hear about text messages the married cartel kingpin sent to his mistress—mixing sweet nothings with thinly veiled threats, the New York Post reported. "Look, the mafia kills people who don’t pay or people who snitch, but not if you’re serious, love,” he wrote to Sanchez in 2012. “Lies are what cause problems. Don’t lie and people will always see the good, love. Always remember that. I’m telling you this because I love you,” he wrote in another text. Sanchez testified that she felt “threatened” by her lover and worried that he might actually hurt her—even though the two apparently had a child together. “This is your son,” she wrote in one 2012 message. In reply, Guzman wrote, “Hello, my king. I congratulate you because you’re a real man.”
