EU Chief Tells Theresa May There’s ‘No Room Whatsoever’ for Brexit Renegotiations

One of the most powerful officials in the European Union has told British Prime Minister Theresa May that there is “no room whatsoever” to renegotiate the Brexit deal she agreed to with European leaders. May will now attempt to rejigger the terms of her agreement after she canceled a vote in the British Parliament, previously scheduled to take place Tuesday, because it was headed for certain defeat. She hopes European leaders will cede more ground to persuade British lawmakers—who have to approve any deal before it becomes law—that her deal is the best available before arranging another date for the vote. But European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker ruled out any formal renegotiation Tuesday as May arrived in the Netherlands, saying “there is no room whatsoever for renegotiation” of the divorce deal. However, he added that “if used intelligently, [there] is room enough to give further clarification and further interpretations without opening the withdrawal agreement.”
