European Union leaders reached an agreement on immigration overnight, spokesmen for the bloc announced Friday. Under the deal, EU countries will voluntarily set up secure centers to handle requests for asylum, refugees will live in whichever country agrees to take them, and immigrants whose asylum petitions are rejected will be “returned.” After the approximately nine-hour talks, no details were announced about which countries would build processing centers or accept refugees, but French President Emmanuel Macron said the centers would be where immigrants initially arrive. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte praised the deal, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it did not resolve enough disputes.
